TIM DOSEMAGEN, Ed.D.
Founding Head of School
Tim’s nearly 25 years in education have given him the breadth and depth of experience needed to build NCA and make it something exceptional. We wanted to share the following details on his background and explain why we are so excited to have him on board.
He is passionate about teaching. He began learning what he describes as “the art of teaching” as a foreign language excellence instructor with the Kenosha Unified School District in Wisconsin, teaching Chinese to students in kindergarten through eighth grade. As a faculty member with the University of Phoenix Online, he taught more than 300 courses spanning six of the university’s seven colleges. Most recently, he has been an adjunct professor of intelligence studies with the American Public University System. He very much looks forward to spending time in NCA classrooms, whether he’s observing or is subbing for an absent teacher; it’s an opportunity to get to know the students and support the faculty while doing something he loves.
He has a deep belief in the power of classical education. His K-8 education at St. George Catholic School in Kenosha gave him firsthand experience with its practicality, its ability to instill in students a lifelong desire to learn, and its focus on civic service, love of country and strong moral character.
He has extensive experience in designing and developing curricula – something many heads of school do not have. Much of this is at the post-secondary level, requiring involvement not only by faculty and subject matter experts, but also by local employers. This makes him well-prepared to guide our implementation of the Hillsdale College K-12 curriculum and our innovative World of Work approach that will introduce all students to four diverse career pathways – college preparation, career technical education, military leadership and entrepreneurship.
He has a strong track record of attracting and retaining students, dramatically growing enrollments and increasing retention rates.
He believes that learning can and should be fun, cool and useful – all at the same time. “If you’re looking at the clock, shame on you. If I’m boring you, shame on me.”
He describes his management style as that of “a classic servant-leader.” He gets faculty and staff involved. He enjoys being in the classroom and the community and embraces the various aspects of a head of school’s job; it’s teaching one day, cleaning up after an event the next and then being involved in communications or fundraising. He believes that the lightest touch typically delivers the best results because everyone is having so much fun.
He is an accomplished administrator, including managing campus finances and achieving budget targets.
He has an innate ability to connect with people, whether it’s students, parents, faculty and staff, alumni, local business leaders or other community partners.
Tim’s post-secondary education career has included serving as director of ITT Technical Institute in Tucson, Arizona; dean at Brown-Mackie College in Louisville, Kentucky; vice president of academic affairs and online at The College of Health Care Professionals in Texas; vice president of academics at Blue Cliff College in Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana; provost and vice president of academics at Collins College in Phoenix and vice president of academic affairs at the University of Phoenix – Southern Arizona campus.
He served one term on the State of Arizona Commission on Post-Secondary Education, having been appointed by then-Governor Jan Brewer and confirmed by the Arizona Senate.
Tim has a Doctor of Education degree in management of educational programs from Nova Southeastern University in Davie Florida, a Master of Science degree in human services from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese studies from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland.
And a few other highlights to help you get to know him:
Tim is a native of Southeastern Wisconsin, growing up in Kenosha.
Tim and his wife, Cheryl (Cheri) have been married for 36 years. They have two children and four young grandchildren.
Tim is fluent in Chinese, conversational in Korean and German, and familiar with Spanish.
One of the things Tim is most proud of is his lifetime involvement in Scouts. He is an Eagle Scout and, as a member of the Order of the Arrow, achieved the Vigil of Honor – the Order’s highest honor. He has held director positions with the Southeast Wisconsin and Northeast Illinois councils of the Boy Scouts of America (now Scouting America).
Tim’s career outside of education has also included providing Chinese translation services, working as a management consultant and serving as an intelligence analyst/linguist with the National Security Administration and the United States Air Force.
If Tim is not at school, you will likely find him writing, on a golf course or on a hiking trail.
Please join us in welcoming Tim to NCA. We can’t wait for you to meet him in person.
